Dr Andrew Deakin

MEng PhD FIMechE CEng,  technical director, Dumarey Green Power

Andrew gained his PhD from The University of Leeds in the UK while working as a research engineer in the field of vehicle dynamics. He founded the Leeds University Formula Student car racing team in 1995.

In 2003 Deakin moved to Renault F1, becoming head of the Transmission Dyno Group, responsible for gearbox and KERS testing.

In 2012 he joined Flybrid, now owned by the Dumarey Group, where he is technical director. He has developed flywheel energy storage systems for off-highway, automotive and motorsport applications. Since 2018 Dumarey Green Power has developed and produced both flywheel and battery energy storage solutions for numerous industries with an emphasis on tower cranes and the construction industry.

Andrew has been involved in the organisation of the Formula Student since its conception and has been chairman of Formula Student for six years. Over 25 years, the competition has engaged with >40,000 engineering students.
